Big Island Philippe Huybrechts and I stayed in Hilo on the east coast of the Big Island (the island of Hawai`i) from Wednesday 23rd to Sunday 27th, and went on day-trips round the island in a rental car. The Big Island is the easternmost and youngest of the Hawaiian islands. It's less than 100 miles across.

Volcanoes National Park, Thursday 24th February Kilauea (altitude 4078') is the youngest and currently most active volcano on Hawai`a, following Mauna Loa.

`Ohi`a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha), the most abundant and widespread tree in Hawaii, which grows with variable habits, including as a small bush like this.

Lava flow obstructing the road to Pu`u Huluhulu (left) and Mauna Ulu (3480', right). This is `a`a, lava with a rough rubbly surface composed of broken blocks. The transition from pahoehoe to `a`a is favoured by high viscosity from cooling or outgassing; the chemical composition is the same.

Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, Friday 25th February We drove from Hilo along the Saddle Road to its summit, then first south to the Mauna Loa NOAA observatory, and north to Mauna Kea. Philippe drove to the summit of Mauna Kea, where the observatories are located.

South and west coasts, Saturday 26th February We drove from Hilo south-west to the coast, followed the west coast to the northernmost point, then returned along the Kohala Mountain ridge and the Saddle Road across the interior.

Walk to Tantalus Peak and Manoa Falls from Waikiki, Monday 28th February The meeting took place at the University of Hawaii and we stayed at the New Otani Beach Hotel at Waikiki, Honolulu, on O`ahu island. I went on this walk the day before the meeting. O`ahu is about 250 miles north-west of the Big Island.
