Alps 2001

Alpine holiday in Tirol, Engadine and Arolla, Saturday, 14th July 2001 to Saturday 2nd August.

Tirol to Engadine
Richard Essery and I met at Bielerhöhe, SW Austria, by the Silvretta Stausee. On Sunday 15th we climbed Schneeglocke (3223 m) in poor weather. On Monday 16th we crossed into Switzerland and descended to Guardia in the Engadine.

Morteratsch
Richard and I met Thomas Toniazzo at Pontresina and walked up to the Boval hut on Wednesday 18th. The weather in the next two days was poor.

Piz Ot
Richard, Thomas and I climbed Piz Ot (3246 m) from Samedan on Saturday 21st. (Actually I did not go to the summit, being nervous of climbing on snow without the rope.)

Aiguille de la Tsa
Richard, Thomas and I parted on Sunday 22nd at Samedan; I travelled to Arolla, where I met Claire del Sol and Steff Lewis. On Tuesday 24th we walked up to the Bertol hut, whence we climbed the Aiguille de la Tsa (3668 m) on Wednesday 25th.

Aosta hut
Dave Storkey joined us in Arolla on 26th. The next day we walked to the Rifugio Aosta and climbed the Dent d'Hérens on 29th, but not to the summit.

Aosta hut to Zermatt
We travelled from the Aosta hut via the Col de la Division and the Col de Valpelline to Zermatt on Monday 30th.

Rothorn hut
Dave and I walked up to the Rothorn hut from Zermatt on Tuesday 31st. We attempted the Zinalrothorn on Wednesday 1st but Dave was too ill to climb so we turned back at sunrise.
